CB&I has a proven track record of developing innovative solutions for storing products at ambient and refrigerated temperatures. Here are just a few of our milestones:

  • Built the world’s first floating-roof tank in 1923
  • Built the world’s first spherical pressure vessel (Hortonsphere®) in 1923
  • Pioneered the transition from riveted to welded tanks in the early 1930s
  • Built the first liquefied gas storage tanks using 9% nickel steel, which is now the industry standard for low-temperature and cryogenic storage
  • Introduced the Waterspheroid® elevated water storage tank in 1954
  • Developed the Hydropillar® elevated water storage tank in 1962
  • Designed and built the first LNG peak shaving plant in 1965
  • Designed and built the first LNG regasification import terminal in the United States in 1971
