CB&I has served the metals and mining industry for decades, providing comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction services for customers that extract and process ferrous and non-ferrous metals,  We’ve built facilities for storing and processing gold, iron ore and steel, copper, bitumen, alumina and other materials.

Meeting industry challenges. The unique nature of these projects, together with the remote location of most raw material deposits, often present complex engineering and logistical challenges. Our broad expertise in engineering design, continued innovation in steel welding techniques and ability to mobilize resources anywhere have enabled us to deliver numerous successful mining projects.

By providing single-point responsibility, we eliminate the waste, duplication of effort and delays that can occur when multiple contractors perform the work. In addition, CB&I can self-perform nearly all aspects of a project, from concept through startup. We operate a vast global network of engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction facilities that allow us to quickly mobilize people, material and equipment wherever they are needed.

Our technologies and services for the metal and mining sector include extraction plants, flat bottom tanks for bulk liquid storage, industrial process vessels, precipitators, process units and piping, blast furnaces, alumina and caustic storage, and other specialty structures.

In addition, we provide licensed process technology and proprietary know-how for gas processing and LNG regasification.

Unique capabilities. CB&I’s self-perform, direct hire construction capabilities set us apart from most other global contractors. Our philosophy of direct hiring and training local field personnel to execute our projects has proven to be a successful model – for us and for our clients. We bring global knowledge and experience to all our projects, and for each location we have an understanding of local contracting, legislation, logistics, and purchasing.

In addition, CB&I has been a pioneer in modular fabrication and construction. Modular construction offers a number of advantages over conventional "stick built" construction. The bulk of the fabrication and assembly are performed at our facilities, which allows us to ensure all work is performed according to our high standards, under controlled working conditions. By reducing fieldwork, we also minimize the project's impact on the customer site. Modular construction also minimizes lay-down space, an important benefit when the field site is small or congested, and reduces delays due to adverse weather. In addition, modular construction can shorten schedules by allowing for concurrent processes, such as fabrication, permitting and logistical arrangements.

Some of the best known names in the industry rely on CB&I to design and build their downstream oil and gas processing facilities, and on Lummus Technology and its partners to provide cost-effective licensed technologies and catalysts. Now that Lummus Technology has joined CB&I, we have considerable expertise in many state-of-the-art refining and petrochemical technologies including gasoline blending components, bottom-of-the-barrel processing, olefins, polypropylene, styrene/polystyrene, light hydrocarbons (C3-C5), phenolics, and other specialty chemicals. CB&I has the unique ability to offer our clients a full-scope product utilizing both in-house technologies and proven EPFC services.

Flexible commercial model. From a commercial standpoint, CB&I offers a balanced and flexible contractual approach to each project, based on the needs and preferences of the client and with the objective of balancing risk between contractor and client. While we continue to execute projects on a lump-sum basis where it makes sense, we are contracting for more and more projects on a "hybrid" basis, where a defined scope of work may be performed lump-sum and the balance on a cost reimbursable basis, which allows for risk sharing between the two parties. We also work on a purely cost reimbursable basis as appropriate.

CB&I designs, engineers and constructs some of the world’s largest energy infrastructure projects, providing a full spectrum of EPC solutions and proven process technologies. We focus on serving customers in the upstream oil & gas, downstream oil & gas, LNG, power, water & wastewater, and metals & mining markets. Storage Tanks/Vessels

Founded in 1889 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, as Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, today's CB&I combines proven process technology with global capabilities in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) to deliver comprehensive solutions to customers in the energy and natural resource industries.

Early Years

While initially involved in bridge design and construction, we turned our focus to bulk liquid storage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coinciding with the western expansion of railroads across the United States and the discovery of oil in the U.S. Southwest. CB&I quickly became known for our excellent design engineering and field construction of elevated water storage tanks, aboveground tanks for storage of petroleum and refined products, refinery process vessels and other steel plate structures.

We supported the expansion of oil exploration outside the U.S., starting operations in South America in 1924, in Asia two years later, and in the Middle East in 1939. Our ability to execute projects anywhere in the world, using our own integrated resources, became (and remains) a CB&I hallmark.

Innovations and Milestones

During the course of our history, we have developed many innovative technologies and achieved a number of industry milestones, including the first floating-roof tank for the oil industry (1923), the first spherical pressure vessel (1923), the first double-wall LNG storage tank (1958), the first site-assembled thick wall steel nuclear reactor vessel (1966), the first marine LNG storage and distribution terminal in the U.S. (1971), the world's largest steel water reservoir (1986) and the world's largest vacuum distillation tower (1999), to name just a few.

Today's CB&I

In late 2000, CB&I embarked on a series of acquisitions that have dramatically expanded our services to encompass the entire hydrocarbon value chain, from wellhead through processing and distribution. With our most recent acquisition of Lummus Global in late 2007, CB&I and Lummus together can now offer customers a total solutions package that comprises technology licensing and related catalysts; front end engineering and design (FEED); EPC services; commissioning; and aftermarket support.

While the scope of our technology and our ability to deliver large EPC projects have grown, traditional CB&I business practices that our customers have come to expect have not changed. We still specialize in lump-sum, turnkey project execution. We still do almost everything it takes to deliver a project with our own direct-hire employees. And our long-standing commitment to safety, quality, integrity and value has not changed.

Highlights from CB&I's history, organized by decades, are presented below.

body content here

Ensuring the health and safety of our employees, our customers and the public – and protecting the environment – are core values of CB&I. We uphold these values in the same way that we ensure the quality of our work – by implementing rigorous controls through every phase of our projects.

Training and focus on leading indicators are the keys to preventing accidents and incidents. Our employees receive extensive training on how to perform their jobs safely, properly and in compliance with environmental regulations.

Our HSE processes and employee training have enabled CB&I to achieve one of the best safety performance benchmarks in the industry. We've executed thousands of projects without a single lost workday or recordable incident. Our projects have garnered numerous safety awards from customers, industry associations and safety organizations.

Safety benefits the customer.

We make safety a core value because it is the right thing to do. But we also know that our health, safety and environmental program benefits our customers. It:

  • Reduces costs – Our commitment reduces our customers' labor costs and the expenses of supervising and auditing their contractor's safety practices.
  • Lessens risk – Safer work practices lessen the probability of an incident occurring at the customer's facility and the potential for liability.
  • Minimizes impacts – Our global Crisis Management Team can respond quickly in the event of a natural disaster, operational upset or unlikely construction event. Their knowledge and preparedness is key to minimizing the impact of an incident.
  • Improves compliance – Our rigorous safety process helps customers comply with OSHA's Process Safety Management standards and other compliance standards.
  • Ensures peace of mind – Our customers can be confident that they have a capable, safety-focused contractor with well-trained and committed personnel on the job.

Safety is the responsibility of every employee at CB&I, and zero incidents is our foremost goal. Around the world, our trained personnel work to ensure the safety of themselves, their coworkers, the customer and the public.

Environmental protection is part of our corporate citizenship.

Protecting the environment is one of CB&I's core values. This commitment is demonstrated through our environmental management program, innovative solutions for reducing air emissions and our technologies for producing cleaner fuels.

We believe environmental responsibility goes beyond regulatory compliance; it is an integral part of our corporate citizenship. Our ability to deliver projects worldwide has been a keystone of our success, and we are an important constituent of the many communities where we work. Our goal is to design and deliver projects that benefit these communities while protecting their natural resources.

Solutions for cleaner air and power.

We've participated in thousands of projects aimed at meeting the world's growing energy demand while minimizing harm to the environment. We've built refinery components that reduce air emissions; power plants that use cleaner-burning, more efficient sources of fuel; storage tanks that incorporate patented emissions-control features; and platforms for harvesting wind energy. We've developed systems that provide clean drinking water for communities and effectively treat wastewater for safe disposal. Every day, we are working on new technologies and solutions that can help our customers prevent or reduce pollution.

Environmental initiatives.

Around the world, our construction, manufacturing and warehouse supervisors receive environmental awareness education and training. Every one of our facilities is periodically audited by a third party expert for environmental compliance. In addition, we have an extensive number of corporate standards that address jobsite environmental plans, hazardous waste management and disposal, emergency response planning, and other environmental matters.

CB&I focuses its corporate responsibility efforts in three main areas:

  • conducting our global business to the highest ethical standards;
  • being a good neighbor around the world where our employees live and work through responsible environmental practices and community involvement; and
  • providing a safe, healthy and enabling work environment that embraces diversity and offers career development opportunities.

Ethical Business Practices.

CB&I is strongly committed to conducting its worldwide business activities in accordance with high ethical standards that are derived from such fundamental values as honesty, integrity, reliability, fairness, mutual respect and trust. We believe this is the right way to operate our businesses. The Board of Directors of CB&I has adopted a Code of Ethics and Corporate Governance Guidelines that ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and encourage the highest standards of integrity in the conduct of our business.

Good Neighbor Practices.

Protecting the environment is one of CB&I's core values. This commitment is demonstrated through our environmental management program, innovative solutions for reducing air emissions and our technologies for producing cleaner fuels. Being a good neighbor also means supporting the communities where our employees live and work through community involvement, work force development initiatives, and using local suppliers when possible.

Solutions for cleaner air and power. We've participated in thousands of projects aimed at meeting the world's growing energy demand while minimizing harm to the environment. We've built refinery components that reduce air emissions; power plants that use cleaner-burning, more efficient sources of fuel; storage tanks that incorporate patented emissions-control features; LNG facilities that provide greater access to clean-burning natural gas; and platforms for harvesting wind energy.

Community involvement. CB&I employees volunteer their time in health, educational and environmental organizations in communities across the globe, and we support social, economic and cultural development initiatives in conjunction with many of our major projects. A prime example is in Peru, where CB&I is building South America’s first baseload LNG liquefaction plant. (See sidebar.) The Peru project is just one example of our long-standing practice of hiring and training local workers at our jobsites worldwide, often providing marketable skills and significantly higher wage-earning potential to these individuals. We also do business with local suppliers whenever possible.

Responsible Workplace Practices.

CB&I is committed to treating every employee with respect and dignity and providing a safe, hospitable and quality work environment. We recognize that a motivated, well-trained, diverse workforce is a significant competitive advantage.

Health and safety. Safety is a core value at CB&I. It is the responsibility of every employee, and zero incidents is our foremost goal. We implement rigorous controls through every phase of our projects, and our employees receive extensive training on how to perform their jobs safely, properly and in compliance with environmental regulations. Our HSE processes and employee training have enabled CB&I to achieve one of the best safety performance benchmarks in the industry.

Respecting diversity. In the course of our 120-year history, CB&I has assembled a talented workforce from locations around the world, intermingling employees from all cultures and traditions to best leverage their talent and expose them to career development opportunities. On many of our larger jobs, the project team often comprises individuals from 25 or more different nationalities, working together toward a common goal. Many employees who first joined CB&I in their home country subsequently move with us from project to project around the world.

Enabling and hospitable workplace. CB&I is firmly committed to a workplace free from discrimination, hostility or harassment. The company has a policy of promoting equal opportunity in employment without discrimination based upon race, color, religion, sex, gender, age, national origin, disability or any other status protected under applicable law. Discrimination or harassment based upon any of these characteristics is prohibited and will not be tolerated.

Employee  development. CB&I is committed to providing our employees with a working environment that is conducive to development and career growth. We provide employees with numerous opportunities to improve their skills, further their education and advance within the company.
