CB&I is a leading provider of synthesis gas (syngas) generation plants for refinery and petrochemical applications. Over the past 35 years, we've designed and built plants around the world that produce high-purity hydrogen and carbon monoxide streams.

Leaders in syngas solutions. Our syngas solutions include hydrogen/carbon monoxide (HYCO) plants and carbon monoxide (CO) plants that utilize steam methane reforming (SMR), autothermal reforming (ATR) or partial oxidation (POX) technology. (For customers requiring pure hydrogen streams, we also design and build hydrogen plants.) The choice of process technology depends on the desired H2/CO ratio, feedstock, oxygen availability and cost, environmental considerations and other factors.

SMR-type plants with a design capacity of more than 7 million standard cubic feet per day incorporate our proprietary HYFORMING™ box reformer furnace technology. Plants with a design capacity of up to 7 million standard cubic feet per day feature our proprietary H2Drogen™ cylindrical reformer furnace technology. Both technologies combine efficient energy utilization and superior performance with safety and ease of operation.

Offering construction options. We execute plant projects using modular or conventional "stick-built" construction, depending on the specific project requirements. Modular plants are pre-assembled at our in-house fabrication facilities, allowing us to exercise rigorous quality control and reduce delays due to adverse weather. Our crews can test fit components in the shop, eliminating the potential for time-consuming and expensive fitting errors in the field.

Modular construction also reduces the impact of the project on the customer's site, an important benefit when the project is located within an operating plant. Less in-air fieldwork reduces the customer's risk, and requirements for on-site skilled labor are minimized. In addition, various aspects of the project – such as permitting, fabrication and shipping arrangements – can be accomplished concurrently, compressing the project schedule.

Our services for syngas projects include conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, start-up and operator training. We execute most projects on a lump-sum, turnkey basis, handling everything from concept to startup with our own resources whenever possible. Our unique approach is possible because we have a vast network of integrated engineering, welding, fabrication, procurement and construction resources that can quickly be mobilized to virtually any project location.

By providing single-source responsibility for projects, we are able to shorten project schedules, control quality, minimize costs and reduce the customer's risk. This eliminates the duplication of effort, delays and incompatible designs that can arise when multiple contractors perform the work and gives our customers more time to focus on their core operations.
